Music video research
For our media production we had to research the three medias we were making, the first was music videos.
For this we looked into the big four, various genres and inside those genres common themes with many examples from existing music videos. We did a questionnaire and also looked at what makes a good music video.
The big four
The big four are four main music corporations that own smaller music labels each music label own a wide variety of different genres of music. these 4 are Sony, warner, universal and EMI.
Sony Music Entertainment (SME)
SME is part of the Sony franchise with their headquarters based in New York and offices all around the world in Australia, Italy, Thailand, UK, Mexico etc. and making an operating income of 6 billion (2012). originally the company was arc records from 1929 until 1938 where it was renamed Columbia records. in 1966 it was reorganised again to create CBS records and then in 1987 it was bought by Sony and renamed SME.
SME is made up of a wide range of record labels from pop to rock and country.
Some of their record labels include Columbia records, epic records, RCA records, Arista Nashville, masterworks records and more.
columbia records own artists like:
MKTO
- Tenacious D
- The Glee Cast
Epic records own artists like
-
Avril Lavigne
- Sara Bareilles
- A Great Big World
- Michael Jackson
- Paloma Faith
RCA own artists like
Cage The Elephant
P!nk
- Foo Fighters
- Bullet For My Valentine
- 'Weird al' Yankovic
Whereas Arista Nashville just do country and Masterworks just deal with classical composers like 2 Cellos and Arc Assemble.
EMI
- EMI were heavily involved in broadcasting equipment; they provided the first television transmitter to the BBC.
- When it broke down in 2011/12 it was the fourth largest record company.
- There is not one primary genre that the company focus on supporting; they have artists in rock& pop, Dance music and rap.
- The company has many subsidiary labels, for example;
-Parlophone
-HMV
-Capitol
- In 2011 they announced that EMI had sold its recorded operations to Universal Music for $1.9 billion and its Publishing operations to a Sony company to $2.2 billion.
Parlophone
Capitol
UMG
The former named ‘Polygram’ or simply ‘Universal’ the company has been recognised under the current name since 1998 when Seagram acquired Polygram and combined the two renaming them ‘Universal Music Group’.
Many famous artists are signed with UMG, for example;
Rhianna
Owl City
Fall out boy
Maroon 5
Universal Music Group (UMG) is one of the largest music producers/ marketers in the music industry as it focuses on not only music recording but also deals with publishing and merchandising.
The whole of the company focuses on finding new and rising artists and helping them kick off their career in the music industry to various different audiences. It not only helps singers/ artists but they also aim to help songwriters improve their careers and become well known in the industry.
The company have their own merchandising side which focus on promoting the artists. They have contacts in all types of markets in order to give the artists as much publication as possible which is why the company are so well known.
Music Genres
There is a wide variety of different music genres and within each genre an even larger amount of subgenres. Rock, Pop, Dub step and Country are the main four we looked at but there are many more like electric, classical, Blues, Jazz, Hip Hop and many more.
Rock
The rock genre is one of the biggest genres because of how openly appreciated it is. Its one of the genres that we grew up listening to and even now we can quote it if its needed. now though as pop music is growing rock music is being slowly pushed out and being branded with the stereotype that only hard-core metal fans with a million tattoos and piercings can appreciate the genre but its simply not true even though the biker stereotypes are actual fans the majority of listeners are fans who enjoy a good guitar solo and lyrics with actual meaning to them. the pure purpose of rock is that its made by real instruments and real voices, with no electric beats. and even though some of the subgenres incorporate some modern forms of music the base of the genre is still there.
The genre first came around in the 1950s as rock and roll, with influences of blues, jazz and other genres. In the early 70s glam rock was the centre of rock with bands like kiss and twisted sister, whereas in the late 70s and 80s punk rock altered rock music introducing sub genres like new wave, post punk and alterative rock. From the 90s on alterative rock has been at its highest and even influenced mainstream music with subgenres like indie punk, pop punk and rap rock.
Rock music has been associated with social and political activism with views towards race, sex, drugs, authority and general rebellion towards society. It revolves around the idea of anti conformity but at which point does that anti conformity become conformity, when so many people are in the rock subculture that it has become cool to be rock. With most social trends there is a point where being different becomes normal and people move on to the next trend, like indie music that like rock, focuses on people being individualistic. This leaves gaps in the market for new subgenres to be created. Rock music also influenced subcultures and these influenced others.
One of the subgenres is punk rock which heavily dominated rock in the 80s and influenced many other subgenres. This genre is a form of rock that was established in 1976 with roots to garage rock, many of the bands would self produce records and try to perform where ever they could. In the late 1976 bands like the Sex Pistols and the Ramones. The musical movement spread around the world and brought about the punk subculture of expressive, rebellious young adults with a unique and different style with leather jackets and band tees making them stand out significantly from the mainstream. in the 80s punk rock gave influence to other genres and then in the late 20th century the punk pop subgenre became more mainstream with bands such as Blink - 182 and Green Day.
Main themes associated with rock
Rock shows love in an interesting way it shows it as raw, natural, real and dangerous. it shows it as a real thing not fake or unachievable, most rock songs revolve around the break up but some are purely about love and romance like Halestorm - Here's To Us
Even though rock bands are great at showing the raw emotion of love they even better at showing the pain of breakups whether its the sadness like or the need to be the winner after the breakup and be doing better than the other person like in all American rejects gives you hell.
Dubstep
Dubstep originated in South London in the 1990’s within a group of other music such as garage, reggae and drum and bass; the earliest Dubstep releases being tracked back to 1998. The definition of Dubstep comes down to syncopated (off time) drum and percussion beats with bass. One of the biggest supporters of Dubstep when it was just becoming popular was a Radio 1 DJ in 2003- 2004 when he quit however the genre had built up a large fan base and it began to spread in late 2005-2006 when another Radio 1 DJ started to play it on her show in a feature called ‘Dubstep warz’. Today Dubstep is hugely popular being one of the favorite genres of choice and it can be seen being merged in with many recently released pop songs; Some of the biggest Dubstep artists today are Modestep, Alex Clare and Skrillex.
Within Dubstep there is not a real focus on the artist and their personal life, the artists are usually a character who doesn't have any real identity for their audience to admire. They For example, in Skrillex's 'Bangarang' the lyrics are made up of a compilation of beats which appear meaningless.
Country
The expectation within country singers, as you can see from above, is for the women to be extremely glamorous and elegant; all the women in the image have their makeup and their hair done so they look very elegant and smart. On the other hand the style within Country men is to look very casual and butch, usually accessorizing with a cow boy hat to fit into the country stereotype.
Unlike some other genres such as Dubstep, Country artists include their fans in their lives and work a great deal. As country is obviously more popular in America than anywhere else on American television there are many channels which are purely for Country music and these will often feature Country artists live speaking to fans, speaking about their latest music and there are also various shows that are aimed at Country fans. On this channel they also play real shows which don’t feature anything about Country music but they are aimed at country fans which shows how the Country genre is not only specific to music but how it is almost like a community; Country fans are very committed and focused.
Along with CMT there is also a website named ‘Country Music Association World’ which is full of information on Artists, events and various Country Music Awards. This website also has a great deal of information about festivals with links to other sites; As many country artists are not very well known these links will help the audience find these sites much easier. Another key feature of these sites are the options to sign up for a membership so they can get news sent straight to them and they will get first chance opportunities to get news on their favourite artists but this site also has album release information which means that the members will have the options to get the information before anyone else.
POP
The current form of the pop genre originated in the 1950s, the genre often takes elements from various genres to make new sub genres.
Main themes associated with pop
P!nk
P!nk is a pop punk singer, songwriter and actor. She's also an animal rights activist, all her music is written from the heart and based on past experience. Her music videos are very artistic with good visuals and a good narrative that follows the ideals shown in the song. Her music is very much centered around the under dog, its all about starting at the bottom and working your way up and overcoming your insecurities. She is the binary opposite of the stereotypical long blond hair pop singer. At the start of her carer she did start of as a edgyer singer with more punk roots now shes slightly more pop but is still as good as before. For me personally she represents the hard ship of life i a big way like with her song 'perfect', with the very controversial music video that includes scenes of self harm, that focuses around the search of perfection and how different people perceive perfection differently. But she also represents the coming back and not giving in part. This is shown by the catchier / faster beats and the more care free attitude shown, like in her video 'Raise Your Glass' that suggests the 'wrong, people who aren't the perfect popular ones.
True Love
The song is about a love hate relationship where at one time she loves him and others she gets irritated by him its a very good representation about real relationships and how they aren't always perfect. The music video includes graphics with her, her and her husband or her and her daughter, in front. The graphics are very fake and have a pop art feel by using a green screen.
This fake feel is then counter balanced by the scenes of her in her living room with her daughter playing and her running after her, with her husband led on the couch , this is showing the reality of the relationship. Also with her husband and daughter actually being in the video makes it even more realistic. This is good example of her changing her music to grow up with her audience, as her audience is growing up and is focus on different issues so does she.
Another shot she uses is her sat in front of a mirror putting on make up she has nude colours on her face and is in a hooded jacket and a tee shirt, this is very realistic and shows her as a normal person she's showing the truth of life and a relationship. Its nice to see a star dressed normally and acting normally, she's a big contrast to the stereotypical pop singer.
The last is her on a stage practicing with her husband cycling round the stage this shows us that she finds him annoying with the facial expressions she makes, but when they look at each other and smile it shows the true emotion underneath all of the other things.
Blow Me One Last Kiss
Is about leaving a bad relationship and saying goodbye. The video was mostly in black and white apart from the last scene.
The music video is set in a large house and its posh this as well as the light costumes give it a fairy tale feel. Then the next scene she's being painted by the love interest and at a ball in her house whilst dressed in a suit, then the love interest comes along proposes she thinks its her and but its the girl behind her, the suit gives us a masculine view of her which is counter balanced by the girly dress she wears in the next scene of her walking through scenes this shows an idea that women can be girly and be a tom boy at the same time that its not as simple its also gives us idea that if he cant take her for who she is then she doesn't want to change.
the final scene is where the add colour, a balloon full of red paint goes of over them while the love interested is getting married to his fiance and it ruins the wedding pink starts dancing at the isle while everyone runs to leave, this could show how she has come out from a dark place, the black and white colours, and is now enjoying a more colourful interesting life.

We then see her fly of with a man on a flying bike, which whilst also shows her
moving on, helps to emphasis the fairy tale feel of the music video. The video ends with the view of the sky and Fini on the screen this just emphasis this as well.
The Main Level
The main level are a pop band from Norway and have only recently come to light they aren't really that well known outside of their country but with only having a few official songs out they have done very well and i see them as being one of the next big boy bands. Their target audience is teens mostly girls around 15 - 20 they reach this target audience by the pop tunes, the non serious playful music videos and fact they are all good looking. The theme they emphasis is love songs about teen romance this will help to draw in a young audience. The fonts they use on their new single picture and their thumbnails are very teen like and work well for the target market.
The help of YouTube in the making of an artist
Many of the artists that have made their name today have done so via YouTube, With YouTube stars becoming more and more famous even some of the vloggers or video gamers are more famous than those on t.v. and with most of the youth these days watching shows or videos on the internet rather than on t.v. or on the radio it would make more sense to record videos for your loyal subscribers that doesn't even have to be amazing quality, as YouTube is for starting out this low budget method of getting your name out there is great for the majority.
The Vamps
The vamps started out on YouTube, some of the members had their own channels as well as the bands. At first there was only the three of them singing in a room with decent filming quality and good equipment, over the time they become more well known and built up their fan base. The band are currently on their first tour and are very well known this shows how big of an influence YouTube is on the target audience. The band itself toured with Mcfly which was what really brought them into the public eye after this tour they became even more famous and released their first album and made a few music videos. The help from Mcfly suggests how important other artists can be in the making of a star, just like when people do duets or have another artist featured in the song.
The Secrets
they are a small band from Birmingham/Bolton who sing pop covers they have become really popular and became well known after they sang a vamps song this emphasizes how other artists can help others make their name. so many people sing different covers of so many songs, but the secrets make the songs their own. their music is aimed at teen girls. They recently went round a vamps concert to introduce themselves to fans, pretty much all of the fans at the vamps were girls between the ages of 14 and 18 so this is a great way to market towards your target market.Icejjfish
Even though YouTube is great to help bring good bands into the public eye it can some times bring forward some strange artists, icejjfish is still an unknown on whether he is a serious singer or just sings as a joke but either way his first video 'something about you girl' went viral very quickly, because of how bad it was, the problem with this though is whether he know why it became viral other wise this could be bad for him as an artist. either way without YouTube no one would know who he was.
Sexualisation
In many videos sexualistaion of noth sexes can be seen however sexualisation of women is more common.
In Pitbull’s song ‘Wild Wild Love’ we can see the woman are being massively sexualised. The one man in the video is seen dressed in an expensive suit, living in a large house whereas all the women are seen dressed in silk corsets with bunny ears on (as seen in the above image) which we instantly associate with Playboy or we assume it has some sort of sexual connotation.
In Jennifer Lopez’s ‘I luh ya papi’ the point is made of women in the video taking advantage of the men that are casted in it. At the start they discuss how women are always sexualised in music videos so they decide to do the complete opposite; we see the women all dressed in appropriate clothes with the entirety of their bodies covered up whereas the men in the video are shown in speedo type swimwear and the women are shown as almost over-powering the males.
Lyrics.
In some music videos lyrics are incorporated with the actual video.
In Shawn Mendes’s ‘show you’ video the lyrics are presented on the screen as they are sung, they are in a font which is representative of hand-writing and as the artist sings the words they appear on the screen as if they were being written which means that the audience watching the video can keep up with the words as he does.
Narrative
Some music videos are used to tell a story which fits in with the song.
In Hot Chelle Rae’s ‘Honestly’ the video follows the story of a couple and their breakup. Within the song the lyrics focus on how the couple are falling apart and the song is played parallel to the video so the two run in parallel with each other so we can follow the story better. |
In Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’ she can be seen within a group of ballerinas dancing in a style completely opposite to the rest of the dancers. There are multiple different genres of music throughout the clip and in each one we can see her in different costume dancing along to the song or making a joke out of the dance genre.
Although Parody can be taken in a very serious way it can also be taken as a complete joke. There are many YouTuber’s who have their own channels specifically to create their own videos of popular songs however they will change the lyrics and use aspects of the official video while making fun of it at the same time; The key of awesome is a page which does this. One of their most famous parodies is 'Love The Way You Lie' in which they altered the lyrics and included subtitles at the bottom of the video so the audience are able to learn the lyrics for the parody and it adds emphasis to the fact that they have changed the lyrics.
Atmosphere
An example of music videos being used to create atmosphere is ‘Beauty and a beat’ by Justin Bieber ft. Nicki Minaj
This video is set in a water slide park at night time with a great use of mise-en-scene. The theme of the song is to do with a party theme so to work a long side this the video is a party in a water park which links in with the song but also allowed the director to use a huge variety of different shots from underwater to a hand-held camera.
Mise - en - scene
Mise-en-scene is the use of costume, make-up and props in a music video to create humour or affect within a music video
In Rixtons’ video for ‘Make out’, as well as being a parody video, there is a massive use of Mise-En-Scene featured throughout. The band incorporate a variety of different looks from some of the most well know music videos of today by mimicking the mise-en-scene from those videos.
Animation
After looking at various other music videos and certain scenes from films we wanted to look into the effect that by using some animations within the video would give to our music video. As mentioned before the song deals with very adolescent themes to add some animation could be very fitting and allow us to incorporate different techniques to make the video more interesting. Things such as animation are seen in many music videos and can also be seen in some films which ensures that our video will be as fitting to a real music video as possible.
While researching the incorporation of animation into music videos (and films) we looked at a range of examples, mainly clips from 'Scott Pilgrim VS the world' and various music videos.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Animation was first introduced into music videos in 1926 with the example of 'following the bouncing ball' which later turned into the famous karaoke; the lyrics would be shown on screen and would you be able to see what exact word was being sung so you could follow along. In the years following cartoons would be shown using the voices of some of the more famous musicians of that time in live-action segments of those cartoons. Walt Disney also had a large impact on animation in music videos; films such as 'Fantasia' featured various different takes on hit songs of the time and thus began the incorporation of cartoons. In music videos (Fantasia and also modern day videos) cartoons are mainly used in order to present a dream like sequence, to take the audience on a journey through the video that would not have the same effect on the audience if it was done through the used of raw filming. Whether its full animation or small additions it allows us a different view on how the song is meant to be percieved and what meaning each of the lyrics has- when we see animation it is clear that they are used to add extra meaning which the director or artist may not be able to portray without the use of animation. Without the use of animation it is not as clear that every tiny thing is done for a reason but as animation is completely handcrafted we are more aware that it's purpose is more important and crucial to the whole video.
Target market
To find out who our audience is and what they want and look for , we created a questionnaire that we gave to a range of people to find out these factors.
The first question allowed to see who I was asking most of the people I asked were 15 - 20 , this was due to ease and convenience as I asked students but allowed me to what the more active music listeners like and want in a product.
I found that the most popular genre is pop which works nicely as that was my chosen genre so I was able to see that as the majority of people were 15 - 20 they would be my target audience for the genre pop.
Because the majority was female I decided to use a female target audience as I could make my product suit them better as I have more knowledge on this target market.
Q4. what sort of style e.g. classic, colourful, would you like in a music video?
The majority said classic and artistic, some saying slow and beautiful and a few said colourful, some said bold and one said graphics. This gives me an idea of how I should plan my music video and what style I should use to make the product the most appealing to my target market.
Q5. Whats your favourite style for a female singer to have e.g. classic, indie, punk ect
The majority said classic and modern and added they wanted a realistic style some said they wanted an indie style and a few said daring and unique. I used this information to decide hair, costume and make up suggestions and also the image I needed to give the singer and details to produce the ideal star persona.

Websites
I've noticed that different genres tend to have different style websites for example pop with have different styles, colours, fonts, types of photos e.c.t. to say pop. For each genre of music that i have looked at i have analysed some websites, I've looked at what works well and what doesn't.
Dubstep
These are screenshots of the Nero and Skrillex websites which are both extremely well-known Dubstep artists. As you can see the main colour of both the website homepages is black with hints of white which gives the connotations that the genre is the kind that should be taken very lightly such as pop music is; it could be said that the audience are more dedicated to their lives focusing on music.
The logos/ symbols that take up a large portion of the front page are very simple and memorable which means that is they get a new audience it will be easy for them to remember so they will be able to search the artists easier as they will have the logo/ symbol in their mind so they can make the connection between the logo and the song or artists who song it is; The satisfy logo is more memorable than the other as the name is incorporated and is a large part of the whole symbol. Dubstep is more about the music than the artist unlike other genres so the pages don’t include any tabs that take you to other information such as tours, albums, information on the artists and merchandise. From the skrillex website you are able to purchase the album/ song by clicking on the link and going straight through to app stores and on the Nero website you are able to share the page on various different social network sites and you can play the song directly from the website.
Another feature that can be seen on the websites that you would find on any other genre site is the logo of the artist’s manager or record producer. It can be seen on the Nero page in the bottom right-hand corner as if someone likes the artist and want to see more bands like them if they research the label they can go on to find more artists.
Country
I chose to analyse the website of Hunter Hayes as when we come to make our own music video we will most likely be aiming it at a teenage audience so I decided to analyse a site which fitted our brief so we would have more idea of what we are doing for when we come to making our website.
When you first enter the site there is a slideshow of adverts of many of Hunters upcoming events. As this is the first thing you see when you enter the site you will automatically be drawn to them and instinctively want to find out more about the slide that is on. By having a slideshow instead of one fixed image it means that you see more adverts and you will find out about more than you could if there was just on fixed image.
At the top of the website there is a small bar which includes the Hunter Hayes logo and the option to log in. By having the logo on the top of the page it means that where ever you navigate on the website you will always see the bar and his logo will stick in your mind. By having the log in option on this bar it means that if someone is on the website and wants to log in, instead of having to go back it will be right in front of them when they need it.
Pop
on a pop website you would see bright colours interesting fonts and many different shots, most of them being from photo shots rather than action shots. There would be a simple layout with items that is appealing to their audience like forums, downloads, social media links, tours and plenty of pictures.
The Main Level
The main level is a Norwegian band in the pop genre. The light, bright colours represent the sea and calm water. They are very relaxing colours and are quite boyish as you would expect, the look is very modern and sleek, which is very stereotypical of the pop genre, i really like this colour scheme as the bold but light colours remind me of the young adult age range, the colours aren't garish which you would find for a younger audience and not to sophisticated for an older audience. The layout is very nice and simple its not to cluttered like some websites which makes it a lot nicer aesthetically and simpler to use.
The writing is very simple and easy to read its very nice and fits in with the theme. The white on colour looks very simple and light its very pure and clean, it gives us the idea they are sweet, nice, good people it suggest a sort of friendly vibe that makes us feel closer to the band.
Most of the options are very stereotypical of music websites like news, media, events and contact this helps all music websites have a consistency that allows us to know what to expect. A couple of the features are very much aimed at the young adult, female market. 'The boys' option takes you to a short description of each member you can find out their star sign, height, motto and about their music career this is very appealing to their younger teen audience who want to know everything about their favorite member. The lyrics option is very interesting and i haven't seen it a lot on websites it means you have everything in one place, when you've been singing along and your not sure on what one of the lines is, you normally take to Google but for this band its all in one place, it really makes the website more interesting and would give it more views. Then they have a fan stuff page with loads of photos of the band members this really will appeal to the target range as they always want to see pictures to share with friends or make them their screen saver.
There are many links to various social networks and the store, this attracts their target audience, as their audience wants to know whats the band are doing and when. The social networking and online store( which is coming soon) is aimed at the young adult age group, who want everything in one place and by having an online store they can order whatever they want from anywhere. The updates at the bottom allow you to see any important information even if you don't want to wade through a million twitter posts. This is a great way to attract your audience and invite new ones as they may stumble across your page or be suggested the link are are easily able to read your description and listen to all of your songs within a few minutes. I am definitely going to have to include a few social media links on my webpage.
These symbols at the top of the webpage also is aimed at the young adult market, the fact the audience must know prior what each symbol means i.e. twitter, Facebook, iTunes, sound cloud e.t.c. must mean they are of this age range, is not going to be for a older or even younger generation who may not know what they mean. This will just link their music to a variety of different mediums such as face book and sound cloud and this makes the website the hub of the bands information, you can refer to it for anything.
Katy Perry
The website is very light, airy and very feminine, the light blues blend nicely with the white to create sky colours that is very relaxing. There are flowers in the background and she is wearing natural colours, this gives the website a very indie feel, this feel is very common now as indie and pop music is merging and indie is becoming more and more popular which is slightly ironic as indie is short for individual. By incorporating the # into the main layout of the website it allows a huge connection with teen culture via twitter, this is also shown with the Instagram and Pintrest logo. The picture in the background works really nicely especially for this genre as the colours are light there isn't too much going on with the image, if it was a rock website with dark colours it may not work as well but because the background colour and the image and text box colours blend really nicely it works well. the font is very square and straight, its bold and works as a nice contrast this works nicely as the title of her new album is 'Prism', if the writing was curled and rounded it just wouldn't work, the theme of the album 'Prism' is also echoed in the picture boxes that are triangular, the bold black writing also acts as a polar opposite to the general theme as it looks very punk rock instead of pop indie which could represent the edginess she still has and puts into her songs. By her making jewelry for Claire's and advertising this on her website shows that she is trying to expand her audience to the new and growing preteen group, the 10 - 13 year old's that have been immersed in pop culture from a young audience, technology is growing and children have an ever growing need to grow up and be older they are wanting to look like their favorite celebrity and listen to their music.
The website has a really good layout that I've seen in most websites lately compared with the main levels website Katy Perry has a page similar to e of e (see rock websites),where instead of going to each separate webpage which is very structured and square, all of the information is on one page an you just scroll down in order to view each page. this makes it a lot simpler and flows better than an average website. this is a really nice layout to use and i think it would work really nicely for our website. Also by having access to her album online you don't have to spend ages looking for her album, it means you can gain access to everything from one page. It's also the best way to promote your album directly to your fans, if they are looking at your page they probably listen to you music.
This navigation bar is aimed at her target audience of teens / young adults as they will use at least one of these and each is a great way to advertise your band, by connecting to your fan base in many different forms it allows you to no only engage and influence your current audience but also gain new listeners. By the bar having logos instead of writing, like the main levels page, just shows how their audience is on at least one of these sites and will recognize it, these social networks are also highly associated with the genre and aren't really know in relation to say heavy metal for example.
The layout and colour scheme goes darker and more edgy, almost to show her two sides, that even though she enjoys singing lighthearted love songs like 'birthday' she also does emotional powerful songs like 'part of me' this is reflected on the ow white on black, compared to the black on white this symbolizes the two parts of her personality. the diamonds for the text boxes and the jagged lines on the background shapes helps to echo further the 'Prism' theme, the shapes in the back almost looks like light and old dance floor tiles, it makes it very futuristic and clean. The look is very stereotypical of electric music which she uses influences of on her song 'This Is How We Do'. which is also very popular and aimed at the teenage / young adult age group. Also by having the prism share your story it allows not only her fans to be connected to her but fans can be connected with each other, and makes it feel like a community.
Indie
With indie i would expect light colours and interesting designs.
Ingrid Michaelson
Ingrid Michaelson is an indie country singer which is why her website is slightly contradictory as you can see aspects of each genre. the first thing you see is a page before the main website with her photo shot for her new album 'afterlife', there are bold colours and a fun light hearted feel the colours on her bracelets and the colour of the confetti and the glitter represents a party aspect that's aimed at her young adult audience it also reflects the views in her single 'afterlife of getting through life, being strong and living life to the fullest. Also even though shes covered the fact it is a topless photo means her audience wouldn't be any younger than teenagers and mostly female, the idea i don't think is too attract males even though that is what it does but to suggest a care free fun party idea and a more natural theme amoungst all the fake looking bold colours.
The menu bar is very simple and is the main pop of colour on the website it looks interesting and stands out on the grey darker background. the orange is a nice mix of a stereotypical pop colour of bright yellow or pink and the punk rock stereotypical colour of red.
